Every reward you give away can bring you two more
Most comment-to-DM campaigns end at delivery. Someone comments, gets the link, and that is the last the post does for you. An UnlockDM campaign treats delivery as the halfway point: everyone who unlocks gets their own referral link and a bonus reward for the friends they bring, and every one of those referrals is verified before it counts.
How the loop runs
Someone unlocks your reward
They comment your keyword, the follow is verified, and the reward is delivered by DM. A normal comment-to-DM campaign up to this point.
The same DM carries their referral link
No second flow to build and nothing for them to go and find. The link is personal to them and generated the moment they unlock.
Their friends run the same campaign
A friend arriving on that link comments the keyword and follows exactly as the first person did. There is no separate, weaker path in.
The referral is verified, then counted
It counts only once the referred person completes the same steps. An unclicked link, or a click that never converts, is worth nothing.
The referrer earns a bonus reward
A second, better reward for hitting a threshold you set — which is the reason to share the link in the first place, rather than a request to.
A referral only counts once it is real
Referral mechanics attract exactly the behaviour you would expect: people referring themselves, second accounts, friends-of-friends who never actually engage. Counting raw link clicks would make the numbers look good and the campaign worthless. So every referral is scored before it is credited.
Three verification modes
Set per campaign. Most run on standard.
- Light
- Referrals verify automatically once the referred person completes the flow. Fastest, and fine for a low-value reward.
- Standard
- The fraud score runs on every referral. Clean ones are credited immediately; anything questionable is flagged for you.
- Strict
- Every referral waits for your manual approval. For a genuinely valuable prize.
What the fraud score weighs
Eight signals, combined into a score from 0 to 100.
- Referring yourself25 per attempt
- Same IP address as the referrer20
- Matching device fingerprint20
- Repeated referral attempts5 each, capped at 15
- Unusually many entries10
- Suspicious comment pattern5
- Very new account3
- Very low follower count2
Up to 25 clears automatically. 26–50 is surfaced for review, 51–75 is flagged, and above 75 is rejected. You see the flags and make the call.
Make the competition visible
A referral link that nobody can see the results of is just a link. Each campaign gets a live leaderboard ranking participants by verified referrals, and your participants can see where they stand on their own bonus page — which is what turns a one-off share into someone actually trying.
For giveaways, the winner picker draws at random or takes the top N straight from that ranking. It only ever draws from verified participants, so the winner is never someone who gamed the entry.
The leaderboard, winner picker and fraud-flag queue need a campaign on the Drop tier or above. Referral links and bonus rewards work on every tier, including your free first campaign.
No other Instagram DM tool we track does this
We maintain a comparison table of 8 Instagram DM automation tools, each with the date its pricing and features were last checked. All 8 do comment-to-DM. None of them has referral rewards.
That is not a claim about which tool is better. ManyChat does multi-channel automation, AI replies and a shared team inbox, and UnlockDM does none of those. But if the reason you are running a campaign is to grow — to have the people who claim your reward bring you the next set of people — this is the part that does it, and it is the part the rest of the category has not built.
What this does not do
- No affiliate payouts or commission tracking. Bonus rewards are the same kind of thing as the original reward — a link, a code, a file link — not money.
- No messaging your past participants later. There is no broadcast, scheduled send, or bulk DM anywhere in UnlockDM.
- Referral tracking runs inside a campaign. It does not follow someone from one campaign to the next.
- Instagram only. A referral link shared to WhatsApp still sends the friend back to Instagram to comment.
Common questions
- What counts as a verified referral?
- A referral is verified when the referred person completes the same steps the campaign asks of everyone else — commenting the keyword on your post and, if follow gating is on, actually following your account. A click on a referral link is not a referral. Neither is a sign-up that never finishes the flow.
- Can someone refer themselves to farm the bonus?
- Self-referral is the single heaviest signal in the fraud score, at 25 points per attempt, and same-IP and matching-device-fingerprint each add 20 more. A participant who crosses the threshold is flagged for your review rather than silently counted, and you decide.
- Do I have to approve every referral by hand?
- Only if you want to. There are three verification modes. Light auto-verifies, standard applies the fraud score and surfaces anything questionable, and strict sends every referral to manual review. Most campaigns run on standard.
- Which plans include referrals?
- Referral codes and bonus rewards are on every tier, including the free first campaign. The leaderboard, the winner picker and the fraud-flag review queue require a campaign bought on the Drop tier or above.
- Does the referral link work if the friend is not following me?
- They will be asked to follow before the reward is released, exactly like anyone else who comments the keyword. The referral link changes who gets credit for bringing them, not what they have to do.
- What happens when a campaign ends?
- Referral tracking stops with the campaign, and the leaderboard for that campaign stays available so you can see who brought whom. There is no scheduled or bulk messaging to that audience afterwards — UnlockDM does not send broadcasts.
