PilotDM and UnlockDM both turn an Instagram comment into an automatic DM. The pricing could not be more different. PilotDM is free for creators, with unlimited DMs, a follow-before-DM option, Story replies, and email collection. UnlockDM charges once per campaign.
So the decision rule is blunt: if you want everyday comment-to-DM automation, start with PilotDM, because free with no listed DM cap is hard to argue with. Pay for UnlockDM only when you are running a giveaway or launch that needs referral links, a leaderboard, a winner picker, or a follow you can trust. This is a researched comparison from PilotDM's own site, checked on 12 October 2026, not a hands-on test.

Where PilotDM is the better deal
Most free plans in this category are a trial with a ceiling: 500 or 1,000 DMs a month, or a 14-day clock. PilotDM lists unlimited DMs on its free plan and says it charges agencies to fund it. For a creator who posts keyword Reels every week, that is more than UnlockDM offers at any price, because UnlockDM is not built for always-on automation.
PilotDM also covers jobs UnlockDM does not. It collects emails and phone numbers in the DM for free, offers AI-assisted replies, and has a Safe Mode that limits the share of comments that get a public reply during busy spells. If those matter to you, there is no reason to pay. Our free Instagram DM tools roundup compares PilotDM with the other free plans.
One caution applies to any uncapped free tier: Meta's rate limits still apply. A free plan cannot send faster than Instagram allows, so test a big launch on a small post first. Our DM rate limit fact check explains the real ceilings.
Where UnlockDM earns its price
UnlockDM treats a giveaway as a campaign with an entry rule, a reward, and a result. Three things on that list are not on PilotDM's site.
A follow you can verify. PilotDM lists "Follow before DMs" but does not say how the follow is confirmed. Some tools in this category take the person's word for it. UnlockDM checks Meta's is_user_follow_business field when the participant taps the confirm button, and delivers only to verified followers. Across 21 follow-gated UnlockDM campaigns between 11 July and 6 October 2026, 2,399 of 5,329 participants (45.0%) completed a verified follow, or 55.1% without one very large campaign. About half the people who comment do not end up following, so whether the check is real decides who gets the prize.
Referral links. Every UnlockDM participant gets a personal link, and you can set a bonus reward for bringing a set number of friends. It credits people only for new entrants, which is the point of a giveaway meant to reach past your current audience. Our guide to running a giveaway with referral links covers how to set the threshold.
A way to close the giveaway. Drop and Viral campaigns add a leaderboard and a winner picker. Without them, you export commenters and pick winners somewhere else.
A practical split
Many creators do not need to choose. Run everyday keyword Reels on PilotDM's free plan, and use a paid UnlockDM campaign for the two or three giveaways a year where entries, referrals, and a fair draw matter. Just do not attach both tools to the same post: Meta allows one private reply per comment, so two automations on one Reel would race for it.
Who should pick which
Pick PilotDM if you:
- Want comment-to-DM running all the time, free
- Want email or phone capture without a paid plan
- Are happy with a follow prompt whose check is not documented
Pick UnlockDM if you:
- Are running a giveaway, drop, or launch rather than everyday automation
- Need the follow verified before the reward goes out
- Want entrants to bring friends through personal referral links
- Need a leaderboard and winner picker to close the giveaway
