UnlockDM vs LinkDM: $19 a Month or Pay per Campaign?

By Vishal Paliwal, FounderOctober 12, 20266 min read

LinkDM and UnlockDM both send an Instagram DM when someone comments a keyword, and both run on Meta's official API. The difference is what they are built for. LinkDM is a long-running subscription tool: 1,000 free DMs a month, then $19 a month for 25,000 DMs across 3 accounts. UnlockDM charges once per campaign and is built around giveaways and launches.

The decision rule: if you want automation running every day across posts, Stories, and more than one account, LinkDM is the better buy. If you run occasional giveaways where the follow has to be real and you want entrants to bring friends, UnlockDM fits better. This is a researched comparison from LinkDM's own pricing and help pages, checked on 12 October 2026, not a hands-on test.

Billing side by side

LinkDM UnlockDM
How you pay Monthly or annual subscription Once per campaign
Free path 1,000 DMs a month, 1 account, every month First Spark campaign free, 50 unlocks over 7 days
Paid entry Pro, $19 a month or $182 a year Spark, Drop, or Viral per campaign
Accounts 3 on Pro, 10 on Platinum+ ($99 a month) One Instagram account per campaign
Channels Instagram plus Facebook DMs Instagram only
Quiet month Your plan price if you stay subscribed Nothing

LinkDM's free plan is one of the most generous in the category. A Reel that pulls 300 keyword comments uses 300 of the 1,000, so a creator posting a few lead magnets a month may never pay. That is a real advantage, and for steady use UnlockDM will not beat it on price.

UnlockDM is priced by campaign length and capacity instead. Spark runs 7 days with room for 500 unlocks, Drop has no time limit and 2,000 unlocks, and Viral has no cap. Our per-campaign pricing guide works through when paying per launch costs less than a subscription you carry through quiet months.

The follow check is the real difference

Older write-ups, including an earlier version of our own LinkDM review, say LinkDM has no follow gate. That is out of date. LinkDM's help centre documents a Follower Growth Tool inside Flow Automations, a paid-plan feature.

Here is how LinkDM describes it. A person taps the button in your first DM, LinkDM checks whether they follow you, and a non-follower gets a "follow first" message with a button such as "I'm now following!". If they tap it without following, LinkDM checks again. After a set number of retries, which you choose between two and four, the next tap sends the requested DM anyway. LinkDM frames this as a fallback for when it cannot see a person's follower status.

That design choice is reasonable for a link-delivery tool, because nobody gets stuck. It also means the follow is encouraged, not required. Someone determined to skip it gets the link after a few taps.

UnlockDM makes the opposite choice. When a participant taps the confirm button, it checks Meta's is_user_follow_business field and delivers the reward only to verified followers. Meta exposes that field once the person has interacted in the DM, which the button tap provides.

The gap between the two shows up in the numbers. Across 21 follow-gated UnlockDM campaigns between 11 July and 6 October 2026, 2,399 of 5,329 participants (45.0%) completed a verified follow. Without one very large campaign, the rate was 55.1%. Roughly half the people who comment do not end up following. A gate that eventually releases the reward would hand most of them the prize anyway. Our follow gate explainer covers why the check matters for giveaways in particular.

Where LinkDM does more

LinkDM is the broader tool, and it is fair to say where.

  • Story mentions, and replies without a keyword. Story auto-reply and Story mention replies are on every plan, Free included. UnlockDM can trigger a campaign from a Story reply, but only one that contains your keyword, and it has no Story-mention trigger. Our Stories-to-DM funnel guide covers when Story replies are worth automating.
  • Facebook DMs. LinkDM's plans include Facebook DM automations. UnlockDM is Instagram only.
  • Several accounts. Pro covers 3 Instagram accounts and Platinum+ covers 10, which suits agencies and creators with side accounts.
  • Always-on tools. Inbox starters, a DM planner, reminder DMs, Live automations, and email capture in chat on Pro.

Where UnlockDM does more

UnlockDM is narrower on purpose. It treats a giveaway or launch as a campaign with a start, a reward, and a result.

  • A verified follow before the reward, as above.
  • Personal referral links. Every participant gets their own link, and you can set a bonus reward for bringing a set number of friends. LinkDM's "Referral Program" is a different thing: it is LinkDM's own affiliate scheme, paying Pro users 30% of what people they refer to LinkDM spend. It does not give your audience referral links.
  • Leaderboard and winner picker on Drop and Viral campaigns, so you can run and close a giveaway inside the same tool. Our guide to running a giveaway with referral links covers how to set the bonus threshold.

Who should pick which

Pick LinkDM if you:

  • Want comment-to-DM running all the time, every month
  • Will fit inside 1,000 DMs a month on one account, or want 3 accounts for $19
  • Need Story-mention replies or Facebook DMs as well as comments
  • Want a follow nudge but not a hard requirement

Pick UnlockDM if you:

  • Run giveaways, drops, or launches in bursts and want to pay nothing between them
  • Need the follow verified before the reward goes out
  • Want entrants to bring new people through personal referral links
  • Want a leaderboard and winner picker for the same campaign

Frequently asked questions

Is LinkDM cheaper than UnlockDM?

For steady, always-on automation, usually yes. LinkDM's free plan covers 1,000 DMs a month on one account, and Pro is $19 a month ($182 a year) for 25,000 DMs across 3 accounts. UnlockDM charges per campaign, which costs less only if you launch a few campaigns and go quiet between them.

Does LinkDM have a follow gate?

It has a follow check called the Follower Growth Tool, part of Flow Automations on the paid plans. A non-follower gets a follow prompt first, but LinkDM's own help page says the requested DM is released after a set number of retries even if the person still has not followed. UnlockDM delivers the reward only after the follow is verified.

Does LinkDM automate Story replies and Facebook?

Yes. LinkDM's pricing page lists Story auto-reply, Story mention replies, and Facebook DM automations on every plan, including Free. UnlockDM can start a campaign from a keyword Story reply, a DM, or a shared post as well as a comment, but it has no Story-mention trigger and is Instagram only.

Does LinkDM have a referral feature for giveaways?

No. The 'Referral Program' on LinkDM's Pro plan is LinkDM's own affiliate scheme, paying Pro users 30% of what the people they refer spend on LinkDM. It does not give your giveaway participants referral links. UnlockDM does.
