Meta Business Agent Now Bills Per Token. What That Means for Instagram DMs

By Vishal Paliwal, FounderAugust 10, 20267 min read

Meta spent June and July getting businesses to turn on its new AI agent for free. On August 1, 2026, the free window closed and the meter started running: $2.00 per million tokens, applied across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram alike.

If you run Instagram campaigns and have been half-watching this rollout, here's what actually changed, what it costs per message now, and where it does and doesn't overlap with comment-to-DM automation.

What Meta Business Agent Actually Is

Announced at Meta's Conversations 2026 event in June, Meta Business Agent is a first-party AI assistant that replies to inbound messages on a business's behalf. It reads a business's Knowledge Base, posts, website, product catalog, chat history, and generates answers instead of firing a fixed script.

On Instagram, it lives inside DMs. Someone messages a business account, the agent replies automatically, and every AI-generated message carries a visible "AI" label so the person on the other end knows they're not talking to a human. It can answer product questions, recommend items from a catalog, book appointments, and run basic lead qualification before handing a conversation to staff.

A daily briefing feature summarizes overnight conversations each morning: what came in, what patterns showed up, what needs a human follow-up.

Setup Is Deliberately Simple

The agent is configured through Meta Business Suite, not a developer console. Four levers control how it behaves:

  • Knowledge — what it can draw from (catalog, website, FAQ document, past posts)
  • Personality — tone and how it rewrites answers
  • Audience — who gets an AI reply at all
  • Handoff — which topics escalate straight to a person

If a business already has the agent running on WhatsApp, turning it on for Instagram takes a few clicks inside the same dashboard. No API integration, no separate build.

What Changed on August 1

Meta ran a free build-and-test window from July 1 through July 31, 2026, explicitly to get businesses comfortable setting the agent up before charging for it. That window is over.

Since August 1, billing runs at $2.00 per million tokens, and Meta folds the AI processing cost and the message delivery fee into that single rate rather than charging for them separately. A delivered AI reply typically consumes somewhere around 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, which lands the real-world cost at roughly 4 to 5 cents per message.

There's a second change coming October 1, 2026: Meta resumes charging for service messages sent inside the 24-hour customer service window, a cost that had also been suspended. Between the two changes, running a high-volume AI inbox on Meta's platforms goes from effectively free to a real, scaling line item inside about three months.

What It's Actually Built to Solve

Meta Business Agent is a customer-service and sales-support tool first. The use cases Meta highlights, answering product questions, scheduling, lead qualification, closing simple transactions, all describe an open-ended inbox where messages vary and a fixed reply wouldn't fit. That's a real, useful job, and it's the same territory covered in the broader AI agent vs keyword automation tradeoff: conversations that genuinely need judgment are where an agent earns its cost.

It's not built around a single post or Reel. There's no concept of "someone commented a keyword on this specific piece of content," because the agent operates at the DM inbox level, not the content level. Anyone who messages the account gets routed through the same agent regardless of what, if anything, they saw first.

Why a Giveaway or Drop Still Needs a Different Tool

A campaign has three requirements Meta Business Agent doesn't touch:

A trigger tied to one piece of content. A giveaway needs "comment GUIDE on this specific Reel" to mean something distinct from a comment on any other post. Meta Business Agent replies to DMs generally, it has no mechanism for scoping a reply to one post's comment thread.

A follow gate. Turning a viral post into actual followers, not just message volume, requires checking whether someone follows before a reward unlocks. That's a follow gate, and it's not part of what a general customer-service agent does.

Referral tracking per participant. A referral loop, where each participant gets a personal link and a bonus for bringing friends, needs per-person state tracking tied to a specific campaign. An inbox-level AI agent has no reason to model that.

None of this means Meta Business Agent is a weak product. It's solving a different problem: reducing manual reply volume in a general DM inbox. A campaign is solving a narrower, more mechanical problem: the same reward, delivered the same way, to everyone who does one specific thing on one specific post.

The Cost Model Is the Other Difference

Token billing scales with conversation volume. A viral giveaway post that pulls in 5,000 comments in a day would generate a meaningful token bill under Meta's per-message pricing, on top of whatever a business is already paying for. Per-campaign pricing works the opposite way: one price covers a campaign's entire unlock cap regardless of whether it moves fast or slow, so a spike in comments doesn't turn into a bigger bill mid-campaign.

That difference matters more the bigger a campaign gets. A slow trickle of DMs barely registers either way. A Reel that goes unexpectedly viral is exactly the scenario where token-metered pricing and flat per-campaign pricing produce very different bills for the same volume of replies.

What to Actually Do With This

If the goal is a general Instagram DM inbox that handles varied questions without a person typing every reply, Meta Business Agent is a legitimate option now that it has a real, published price attached. Budget for it the way you'd budget for any per-message cost, and watch conversation volume, since that's what the bill scales with.

If the goal is running a giveaway, product drop, or lead magnet off a specific post, the requirements are different enough that Meta's own agent doesn't cover them: no content-level trigger, no follow gate, no referral mechanic, and a cost that rises with comment volume instead of staying fixed per campaign.

FAQ

What is Meta Business Agent?

Meta Business Agent is Meta's own AI-powered assistant for WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. It replies to inbound DMs automatically, pulling from a business's catalog, website, and past conversations to answer questions, recommend products, book appointments, and qualify leads without a human replying.

How much does Meta Business Agent cost now?

Meta started billing on August 1, 2026 at $2.00 per million tokens, after a free build-and-test window that ran through July. A typical AI-generated reply uses roughly 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, which works out to about 4 to 5 cents per message across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.

Does Meta Business Agent replace comment-to-DM automation for giveaways?

No. Meta Business Agent responds to whoever messages a business directly, but it has no concept of a specific Reel or post, a follow requirement, or a referral bonus. A giveaway or campaign still needs a tool built around a keyword trigger tied to one piece of content, a follow gate, and per-participant referral tracking.

Is Meta Business Agent free on Instagram?

The free period ended July 31, 2026. Since August 1, every AI-generated reply on Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger is billed at the same $2 per million token rate. There is no separate free tier for Instagram specifically.

UnlockDM sits in the other category from Meta Business Agent on purpose: a fixed per-campaign price, a trigger scoped to one post, a follow gate, and referral tracking, built for the giveaway and drop use case rather than the general support inbox Meta's agent is designed for.
