Black Friday 2026 is Friday 27 November, and Cyber Monday is 30 November. If you plan to use comment-to-DM for the sale, one Meta rule decides almost every choice: a comment buys one private message, sent within seven days. Anything more has to wait until the person replies, and then you have 24 hours from their reply.
So a comment collected on 5 November cannot turn into a sale-day reminder on the 27th. The decision rule: put your comment triggers inside the sale week, make the first DM carry everything the buyer needs, and plan for comments that keep arriving after the sale ends.
The rule, in Meta's words
Meta's developer documentation for private replies is plain about it. Only one message can be sent to the commenter. It must be sent within seven days of the comment. If the commenter replies, you can send more, but only within 24 hours of their reply.
That is the whole constraint. It applies to every tool, including Meta's own ad automation. For how the seven-day and 24-hour clocks interact, see our guide to Instagram's DM windows. This post is about what the rule means for a sale calendar.
When comments actually arrive
We looked at 5,612 keyword comments across UnlockDM campaigns between May and September 2026, measured from each campaign's launch:
| Arrived within | Share of comments |
|---|---|
| 24 hours | 45.4% |
| 48 hours | 52.0% |
| 7 days | 63.4% |
| More than 7 days later | 36.6% |
Two cautions. The clock starts at campaign launch, and some creators attached a campaign to a post that was already live, which makes the tail look longer. The creators are mostly in India and the sample is small, so read this as one platform's pattern, not an industry benchmark.
Even with those caveats, two things matter for a sale:
- Half the response arrives in the first two days. A trigger posted two weeks early spends its best hours far from the sale.
- More than a third arrives after a week. Posts keep surfacing through search, shares, and profile visits. Those late commenters get whatever your DM says, including a Black Friday offer that ended days ago.
A calendar that fits the rule
| Date (2026) | Post | What the DM carries |
|---|---|---|
| 20 to 25 November | Teaser: "Comment EARLY for first access" | A link to an early-access page that stays live through 30 November, plus the exact start time |
| 26 November (eve) | "Comment DEAL and I'll send the sale link" | The live sale link, or the early-access page if the sale opens at midnight |
| 27 to 30 November | Sale posts and Reels | The live sale link |
| 1 December | Update or end the campaign | A "sale has ended" message, or whatever offer is still running |
The key is the first row. Because the teaser DM is the only message you get, the link itself has to be the reminder. Send people a page that works on sale day and tells them when to come back. Do not send "we'll message you when it starts", because you cannot.
If your sale uses a code, put the code on that page rather than in a DM that goes stale. Our post on waitlists and product launches covers building an early-access page like this.
The reply trick, and its limit
A common workaround is to end the DM with "reply REMIND and I'll ping you when it's live". A reply does open a new window, but only for 24 hours from the reply. If someone replies on 20 November, the window closes on the 21st, long before the sale.
The trick works in one situation: a trigger posted within a day of the sale starting. Post on the evening of the 26th, ask for a reply, and the sale opens inside the 24 hours that reply bought. Otherwise it only creates a promise you cannot keep.
The long tail after the sale
Because more than a third of comments can arrive a week or more after launch, plan for the day after. Late commenters on your Black Friday Reel should not receive an expired link. On 1 December, either change the DM to point at what is still available or end the campaign.
This is also where keyword choice helps. A keyword like DEAL outlives the sale better than BLACKFRIDAY does, because the same post can keep delivering an evergreen offer after you update the link. Our guide to keyword calls to action goes deeper on choosing words people actually type.
Festive sales work the same way
The rule is Meta's, so it applies to any sale. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November, with the festival running from Dhanteras on 6 November to Bhai Dooj on 11 November. The same pattern holds: trigger inside the festival week, let the link do the reminding, and update the DM when the offer ends. Our Diwali campaign guide covers the giveaway side.
The rule to remember
Every comment is a single delivery you can make within a week. Spend it close to the sale, send a link that still works on the day, and decide in advance what late commenters should receive.
