ManyChat Contact Billing vs Per-Campaign Pricing in 2026

By Vishal Paliwal, FounderSeptember 19, 20265 min read

Per-campaign pricing can suit a creator who runs occasional launches and wants to budget each event separately. A subscription can suit someone who needs automation throughout the year. The decision depends on your calendar, required features and expected usage, not simply which starting price is smaller.

The phrase “contact tax” can obscure an important distinction: stored contacts and monthly active contacts are different billing units. This is a researched pricing-and-fit analysis checked on September 19, 2026, not a hands-on review. The worksheet below helps you compare your actual costs without assuming that every growing contact list creates the same bill.

Check which contact model your account uses

Confirmed from vendor documentation: Manychat's current Active Contacts model counts people with qualifying messaging activity during the billing cycle, with the active count resetting each cycle. It does not mean every person stored in your database is permanently billable merely because they once interacted.

That distinction changes the estimate for a seasonal launch. An old contact list is not enough information to calculate current usage. Check the pricing model shown in your workspace and use its recorded activity, especially if you are on a legacy arrangement.

Avoid mixing an older contact-tier table with a new active-contact allowance. If two sources disagree, the live account's billing terms and current vendor documentation should determine your purchase calculation.

Compare payment terms before comparing totals

The official pricing page currently displays Essential at $14 per month with $168 billed annually, and Pro at $29 per month with $348 billed annually. Those are annual-payment equivalents, not evidence that you can buy an isolated month for the same amount. Prices exclude tax and may depend on billing country.

The annual commitment matters more than the headline when you only launch a few times a year. Write down the amount charged today, the renewal date and what capacity is included. Use the actual monthly checkout quote if you want monthly flexibility.

UnlockDM pricing is still beta, so this comparison does not publish an exact campaign price or a claimed percentage saving. Use the quote available for your intended campaign, including its limits.

Build a launch-calendar worksheet

List the campaigns you actually expect to run. Separate a brief promotion from an evergreen automation that stays active between launches. An “off month” is only truly inactive if you do not need those ongoing flows.

For each launch, record its dates, expected participants, required capacity and whether another campaign overlaps it. Then compare both options against the same workload.

Budget input Subscription Campaign pricing
Base cost Billing term you will purchase Sum of campaign quotes
Usage Included active contacts and overages Included campaign capacity and extensions
Quiet periods Cost of keeping the plan active Check whether anything must remain running
Extra needs Required plan features or add-ons Any separate tools still needed

Include setup and migration time as a separate operational cost. A cheaper invoice may not be a cheaper switch if you need to rebuild many flows during a launch week.

A calculation that does not invent savings

Suppose you plan four non-overlapping launches. Let C be the quoted cost of one campaign with enough capacity for your expected participation. Four comparable launches cost 4 × C, before taxes, extensions or other services.

Against the currently displayed $168 annual Essential commitment, the base-price break-even is $168 ÷ 4 = $42 per campaign. This is a calculation using a published annual price, not an UnlockDM quote. It also assumes that both options meet the same requirements.

If a campaign quote were below that threshold, its base cost would be lower than that annual commitment. That does not establish overall savings: contact overages, campaign capacity and missing features still matter. A monthly subscription kept only for needed periods could also produce a different comparison.

Repeat the worksheet with a conservative, expected and high-participation scenario. Use your own previous launch data where available, and label guesses as estimates. Do not compare an unlimited workload on one side with a small capped campaign on the other.

When Manychat can be the better fit

A subscription may be worth keeping when several automations run continuously, your team needs ongoing conversation management, or the required workflow spans channels. Manychat advertises a broader automation and Inbox product than an Instagram campaign tool.

Check the plan that includes your required features instead of assuming the cheapest plan is sufficient. Equally, do not treat additional features as waste when they replace work you genuinely do every week.

UnlockDM is a worse fit if you need a general customer-support Inbox or an open-ended AI conversation agent. Its focus is the narrower campaign workflow described in the comment-to-DM guide.

When campaign pricing deserves a closer look

Campaign pricing is worth evaluating when a launch has a clear start, finish and reward, and you want its automation cost in that launch's budget. The key question is whether the capacity and duration fit the event.

Review the campaign-pricing guide for the model, then obtain a current quote. Keep the campaign cost alongside creative production, rewards and any paid promotion when you assess the result.

Use campaign funnel metrics to connect spending to completed outcomes. A low cost per comment is not the same as a low cost per useful participant or customer.

Frequently asked questions

Do inactive contacts always count toward billing?

No. Do not assume that stored contacts are active contacts. Verify the model and activity recorded in your account before estimating your next bill.

Is campaign pricing always cheaper?

No. Frequent campaigns, overlapping launches or ongoing workflows can make a subscription more practical. Compare equivalent capacity and features.

What should I check before cancelling a subscription?

Inventory the automations still running, export the information you need, and check your billing terms. Test the replacement with a small campaign before moving a time-sensitive launch.

Frequently asked questions

Do inactive contacts always count toward Manychat billing?

Not under the current Active Contacts model merely because they are stored. Check your account model and the activity recorded during the billing cycle.

Is per-campaign pricing always cheaper?

No. Total cost depends on campaign count, capacity, duration and the features you need. Frequent overlapping campaigns can favour a subscription.

Are annual headline prices monthly payment plans?

Not necessarily. Manychat currently displays annual-billing equivalents alongside the total annual payment. Check the billing selection before comparing.

What should seasonal creators compare?

Compare the cost of the campaigns they will actually run with the subscription term they actually intend to keep, including any overages and cancellation constraints.
